An early pre Civil War c. 1830 - 1850 Militia Officer's sword. For reference, please see Peterson's "THE AMERICAN SWORD 1775 - 1945", ppgs 78 - 79. The straight blade is double edged, diamond shaped in cross section, and tapers evenly to within an inch of the point. The quillons are straight with acorn finials and there are shell shaped langets.
All of the above from Peterson's sword 70 quoted above, applies to this sword. This sword however is iron mounted with a horn grip whereas the Ames sword (70) is brass with silver and a bone grip. Blade measures 31 in length and is unmarked as to maker. Blade is etched with what appears to be a Damascus pattern.
Chain that went from quillon to the faceted pommel is missing. The item "1830 1850 Dog Head / Pistol Pommel Pre Civil War Militia Sword" is in sale since Saturday, March 2, 2019. This item is in the category "Collectibles\Knives, Swords & Blades\Swords & Sabers\Other Collectible Swords".
