An interesting 1862 letter from Hobart Berrian of the U. Treasury Department to Major William W. Russell, Paymaster of the U. The letter, which is partially printed and partially handwritten on Treasury Department stationery, states The allotment granted by the following person has been discontinued, and the amount paid upon it is places opposite the grantors name: John Howard Marine - J. It is signed at the bottom by Berrian.
