A nice sixth plate ambrotype of a Union infantryman. He wears a standard frock coat with a vest visible underneath. A forage cap with infantry horn rests atop his head. In his hand, the man displays a Model 1849 Colt Pocket Revolver.
The photographer used gold tint on the buttons, hat insignia, and the percussion caps on the revolver. The glass plate has a couple of cracks as shown, but in its case the image remains stable. The case itself is a bit unusual in both construction and material, closing with a rotating clasp.
