AMERICAN MEXICAN WAR CIVIL WAR AMES WITH EAGLE HEAD CROSS GUARD SWORD SIGNED WITH MATCHING SIGNED SCABBARD CA 1848. A good example of a Mexican War also used during the Civil War period US officer's sword made by Ames. These are seen held by US and militia officers in period daguerreotypes. The blade is 32 inches long, double edged, with a spear point The etching is visible. The firm name, however, is clearly stamped on engraved brass scabbard. The scabbard is in nice shape presentation grade. The hilt consists of a knighthead pommel and bone grips. The crossguard is shaped as a spreadwinged eagle and the langets are American shields. The chainlink knuckleguard linked to pommel and crossguard is intact. This is a nice sword of the Mexican War period also used during Civil War with patriotic motifs made by the most famous American sword maker.
