Antique 13 Star Flag Star of David Pattern Civil War Era Parade Flag size. This miniature parade flag or hand waver flag dates from the US Civil War to the Centennial era, 1860s to 1870s. The construction is typical of that period for smaller flags printed on glazed cotton muslin and attached to a slender wood stick. The six pointed Great Star pattern for the 13 stars in the canton is particularly scarce.

The size of this flag is 2 3/4 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches long, mounted on a 5 1/4 inch long wood stick. The dark blue canton with 13 five-pointed stars has the stars arranged in the very rare "Great Star" pattern of a six-pointed Star of David.

The stripes are the orange/red typical of US Civil War era printed flags. The condition is good for a 140+ year old flag, with no fading, and minor folds in the fabric. There is no weakness to the fabric of the flag. The flag was printed with one side showing stronger color than the other. The "stronger" side of the flag has the canton on the right side, which is contrary to the modern usage per the United States Flag Code.

However, this protocol was not adopted until the early 20th century. During the American Civil War there was no preferred way of displaying a flag flat against a surface, and when flags were printed in mass production half would have the canton to the left, and half to the right.
