Short sword made for use in the Confederate Navy in the first year of the civil war. The brass handle is made in the style of a Roman gladius displaying fish scales which were popular during the 19th century.
The ball pommel bears an American eagle with shield on either side. Henry Thomas and Arthur Breese Griswold of New Orleans were arguably the finest CS sword makers of the war. MEASUREMENTS Sword measures 24"long (blade is 19" long by 1.8" wide at widest point) by 5" deep by 2.75 deep and weigh 2lbs 8oz. CONDITION In good condition considering age and use.
The metal shows signs of age and has not been cleaned. The guard has a small split on one side of the reinforcing edge (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
