Antique Violin 1860, American Civil War
Violin American civil war 1860s. Out standing Civil war violin. Lions head scroll complete with tongue, baroque gut strings. Original pegs and tail piece.

Professionally restored United states seal to rear. United States stars, eagle with banner E pluribus unum (out of many one). Phrase originates from the concept that out of the union of the 13 colonies emerged a single nation. Emblazened across the scroll and clenched in the eagles beak on the great seal of the United States.

These violins were issued to union troops by the united states army for entertainment particularly during. Evenings around campfire to ensure troop morale.

This wonderful piece of history comes complete with case and a very strange bow with it.. The construction is unusual in its design, Where the tail meets the body there is no overlap over the body. This style of construction is really more baroque than contemporary in its design.

Similarly the saddle at rear. Is flat with the edge of the instrument. Something else found usually in much earlier violins. B Shephard Mt Plesant mar 1928 Possibly from latter repair or owner.
