A beautiful hand painted original Civil War period tear catcher vial or "lachrymatory"bottle with hand painting and its original ground glass stopper..... These vials were used by both, Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. They were given by a departing soldier to his wife or girlfriend to collect and save her tears.

If the soldier was killed, the tears would be poured upon his grave. Tear catchers go all the way back to Roman times over 2000 years ago....

This is an early flint glass vial.... The square bottle is hand blown with hand painted crosses, beaded designs with gold highlights on 2 sides.... Blue painted sprigs on the other 2 sides.... Flat bottom so actually stands upright on its own barely.... Original ground glass stopper fits perfect..........

7 1/8" tall (8 1/4" with stopper)long..... Excellent shiny nice condition with only one small shallow chip on top surface of lip; no other chips or damage.

We bought this wonderful original tear catcher, along with a couple others that we will be listing, at an estate sale in Illinois, so it may have been a family keepsake passed down through the family since the 1860s.
