CIVIL War M 1850 Staff And Field Clauberg Sword Presented To Lieut K. D. Cheny
CIVIL WAR M 1850 STAFF AND FIELD CLAUBERG SWORD PRESENTED TO LIEUT K. This is one of my favorite patterns of Civil War staff & field officers swords. This is the style that was made in Germany and imported for retail sale to well-to-do Union officers. This one has a full-length blade with a nice lighter tone all over.

You can see a superb amount of the original etching on the blade of the sword on each side. On the front side of the blade it has the union eagle along with the E PLURIBUS UNUM motto of the U. On the back of the blade it has a very clear "US" in ornate letters.

At the base of the back of the blade you can clearly see the maker's mark of the firm of Clauberg of Solingen, Germany. They were one of the highest quality maker's of edged weapons during the American Civil War and imported to the finest retailers. These non-regulation staff officer swords stand out from the rest because of the iron hand guard.

Lettering along with the eagle design in the guard. This one still has the original handle intact and as you can see it has a beautiful look. The wire is the double strand style made of brass and it displays well. It also still retains the single strands of flaking wire.

A wonderful amount of the original rayskin grip is still present. One thing that makes this sword special is the along the backstrap, it has a jeweler quality inscription that lets us know who owned it. It reads Presented to Lieut. Cheny / by Members Hartford City Guard 1866. I did a quick look up on the name and couldn't find him listed. The sword is accompanied by the original all metal scabbard. The scabbard is complete with both rings, mounts, drag and throat. This sword has a very pleasing look for your relic room wall.
