CIVIL War M 1850 Staff & Field Presentation Sword To Lieut A Graff Gettysburg
CIVIL WAR M 1850 STAFF & FIELD PRESENTATION SWORD TO LIEUT A GRAFF GETTYSBURG. MADE BY PDL THE MAKERS OF TIFFANY SWORDS. This is a very nice looking Civil War staff & field officer sword & scabbard. This is the classic style that was carried by the field officer's of the Civil War. The blade has the original etching that is still nice on the light toned blade. The front side of the blade has the patriotic Union eagle in a spread wing stance with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" motto above her. On the back of the blade it has more patriotic and floral designs and the large "US" lettering. The etching still shows up well overall. At the base of the back side of the blade it has the maker mark of the Lunderschloss firm of Solingen German. They made many of the high quality edged weapons for the Union soldiers during the Civil War. On the handle of the sword it has about 95% of the original rayskin grip intact. On top of the wrap it has the original double twist style brass wire with a pretty look that is flanked on each side by a single strand of brass wire. The brass hand guard and pommel cap are present with a great look all over. The basket has the floral pattern with the "US" in the center which lets us know that it was for the staff and field rank of service. The scabbard is in nice shape all over. It is also made of a metal body with brass furniture. It has the original mounts, rings, throat and drag intact.

What makes this one special is the inscription that is on the back side of the top mount of the scabbard. In jeweler quality lettering it reads. A Graff/by the members/of C Co 65th Regt/N. Andrew Graff enlisted in the 65th Regiment New York National Guard as a 30-day volunteer and was commissioned a First Lieutenant in Company B. He appears to have mustered out with the rest of the regiment in July of that year, with very little information available as to the remainder of his military career.

The date and rank stated on the presentation implies he may have remained in the army for some time. This is a great looking Civil War staff and field officer's sword in scabbard from New York.
