PRESERVING HISTORY, CIVIL WAR M 1852 NAVAL OFFICER SWORD PRESENTED TO G D EMMONS 1ST ENGINEER IN 1863 JOINED THE NAVY IN 1859. THE SWORD IS ACTUALLY A TIFFANY SWORD, SHANNON, MILLER AND CRANE RETAILED ALL THE TIFFANY SWORDS AT THE END OF THE WAR. A very fine and handsome Civil War era Model of 1852 Naval Officers Sword and Scabbard with inscribed blade to George D. The sword is a Civil War era sword with the wider blade and heavier mounts of the period.

The ricasso is etched Shannon, Miller & Crane, N. The blade has the owners name, G. Emmons etched in large letters on the blade, between and anchor and a floral design.

The other side has particularly large U. On it, along with a nautical trophy of arms, a circle of 21 stars and various decorative elements. The hilt retains the majority of its original gilt finish. The grip is apparently ray skin, with twisted wire wrap. The scabbard is black leather with gilded brass mounts. The drag has a one-sided dolphin on it. The eagle on the pommel is facing his own right. Emmons joined the Navy as Third Assistant Engineer in 1859.

He rose to First Assistant Engineer in 1863, and became a Chief Engineer in 1871. He married in New York in 1864.

He retired in 1879, and died in 1886. During the 1870s he was actively engaged in experiments with technically advanced stem engines and new fuel systems. Dimensions: The sword in its scabbard is 36.5 inches long overall. The blade is 1.125 inches wide, and 28.75 inches long.
