Civil War West Virginia Honorable Discharge medal (WVHDM)- named. This piece, minted in 1867, has never been worn, and comes in the original box, with the intended recipients name and other pertinent information still legible, in pencil. The ribbon is in incredible shape for a ribbon of 153 years of age. Besides the usual details of the medals design, this particular one is inscribed, on the rim, to DAVID RIGGS Co G 1.

NOTE: I was recently advised by a potential customer that this piece isn't "rare, " and therefore is over-priced. So, I did some research, and my conclusion is a bit different than the potential customer's. While I readily agree that, of the three types of WVHDMs minted, this one had the largest run at the mint, and is therefore, theoretically the most common, I would argue, from a numismatic standpoint, that all WV Civil War Medals are rare, in that only 26,000 were minted, and that over 150 years ago. And to find them in the condition that most available medals are today is phenomenal. Contrast these numbers with any US Government coin issued in 1867. The penny from that year - over 9 million. Finally, of all the WV Civil War medals, of any type, available on line today, there is only ONE WVHDM available. So, ultimately, it is up to the serious collector to decide.
