Nice antique Bowie knife c. Late 1850's to civil war period. The Bowie knives manufactured in the 1800's that didn't have a full tang almost always had the problem of loosening at the guard. The owner of this knife fixed the problem by pinning the tang through the mount near the guard and it is as solid as a rock now.
The owner of the knife also replaced the original, flimsy, paper sheath with a solid leather scabbard which is of the civil war period. The belt loop will accept a belt 1-1/2 or less and is solid. The sandbar stag grips have one small chip missing and a stress crack at one of the pins. The blade is dull grey, cleaned years ago.
The knife is in very good condition and has a lazy "S" nickle silver guard. These type of large guards are only found on the pre-civil war to civil war era IXL Wostenholm Bowie knives. The size of the blade is 9-1/4" and close to 1-3/8" wide.
