During his custodianship he ad a scabbard professionally crafted to fit this knife. This "Second Generation" scabbard is an exact replica of other period Bowie knife scabbards made by this rare and exclusive English maker. The fittings for the scabbard were crated in Sterling SILVER.
The previous owners description (As seen on "worth point") has been copied below. This is an extremely Rare and large dated 1876 "Broomhead and Thomas" Presentattion Bowie Knife!!! It is 18" overall length with a 13"x 2" Blade stamped, (Broomhead and Thomas, "Celebrated American Hunting Knife)! The fine handle is made of a Burl Wood with a Silver oval medallion engraved G. The (unknown) former Owner's initials.
See all 12 photos of the wonderful workmanship in this fine antique Bowie. Broomhead & Thomas were known for quality and this is a very fine example. It has a couple tiny nicks in the Blade and a small tarnished spot at the tip on the Blade on one side only as shown.. Couple nicks and bumps on the Handle but still in great condition.
Handle still tight as when made, used a little but not abused. Scale of 1 to 10 , I'd give it a 9.. It measures 18" overall with the Blade being a full 13" X 2.NO RESERVE and start price LESS than what I paid years ago and before the fine 2nd Gen. While the US Civil War raged between. 1861 to 1865 and the DATE of the presentation (obviously) a few years AFTER that time. I have accurately described it AS "Civil War ERA".
Broomhead & Thomas worked in Sheffield, England in the early 1830's (one source said B&T went out of business in 1834). Just from what I read it looks like the English knife makers were a big source of Bowie knives for Americans in the early part of the 19th century at least and a lot them went to war in the Civil War.
