ORIGINAL US CIVIL WAR OFFICER's LEATHER HAVERSACK, Ca 1861-65. General Description : This original brown leather haversack is in need of restoration. The leather is generally stiff, but still has some pliability. It can be softened with proper saddle care products. As the photos indicate, the right closure strap is torn and the left strap buckle/portion of leather is also broken from the haversack. The left shoulder strap ring is also removed from the back of the haversack. A small portion of the original strap is wrapped around the ring. Repairing these parts of the bag are fairly easy to accomplish, but will require a little patience and some leather work skill with appropriate tools. Replacing the shoulder strap should be done with a period buckle and leather -- it is pretty straight forward.
No repairs are necessary for the interior. Measurements : 14x10x2 inches/36x25.5x5 cm.
Nonetheless, once complete (or even in its current state) and with little investment, this officer's haversack will significantly add to any serious Civil War collection.
