ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR UNION OFFICER UNIFORM FROCK COAT ENSEMBLE, Circa 1861-65

ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR UNION OFFICER UNIFORM FROCK COAT, Ca 1860-65. This includes the Union frock coat, kepi, silk sash, sword belt with colt holster and cap pouch, haversack, gauntlets, and collar/tie. The following describes this uniform ensemble. Frock Coat : Approximate size is 36 (US).

I believe this is a late war frock coat and may have been used post war. The coat has attributes from the war and post war.

The dark blue wool coat is in excellent condition with one match-head size moth nip on the back right shoulder. Otherwise, all seams are tight and there is no other weaknesses or damage. The quilted/padded interior of the coat also is in excellent condition with a striped design.

There is one internal left breast pocket. The collar is dark velvet (slightly faded black) -- there are interior bare spots where the owner's neck rubbed the velvet (see photo).

All front and tail brass infantry coat buttons are Civil War period marked Extra Quality -- they are original to the coat as indicated by the interior tail button protectors having not been altered/removed. The sleeve buttons are Scovill Waterbury. The coat sleeves are 23 inches from the shoulder to the wrist, 8.5 inches wide at the elbow and 4.5 inches at the wrist opening. The Infantry Captain's shoulder boards are fairly worn. The blue velvet/felt insert is mostly gone, but the underlying cloth is dark blue and, therefore, this wear is not noticeable.

The gold bullion is intact and strong. Kepi : The McDowell-style kepi is in excellent condition with no damage to the dark blue wool shell.

The cap has an embroidered gold bullion 5th Infantry horn affixed to the front. The interior is mildly worn from use and is marked Bent & Bush, Boston. The brass side buttons are Infantry designated. Sash : Very good condition Civil War era silk officer's sash -- 114 x 7 inches. Only a few small holes, but no runs/pulls or tears.

As often seen on these sashes, the tassels have faded to a rich maroon-gold color, but are undamaged. Sword Belt : Traditional Civil War officers bridal leather belt with a single cast M1851 eagle plate (#582 on plate, no number on the keeper) with silver wreath, two sword slings with brass snap swivels, matching shoulder strap, and leather side-shield to protect the uniform.

The belt is in very good condition and supple. Included with the belt is a Civil War era Colt holster and cap pouch -- all seams are tight on both items and the plug is present is in the holster. The leather is in good condition on both items, showing only normal wear. The holster belt loop is a bit worn, but sturdy.

The holster and cap pouch are Gaylord marked. The exterior is in excellent condition and supple -- no damage and all seams ares solid.

The leather and cloth interior also is in very good. Gauntlets : I bought these a few years ago to go with the uniform. The gauntlets are not Civil War and probably come from a religious or professional order.

Nonetheless, the gauntlets show well with the uniform. Collar/Tie : These are for show only. The collar is a late 19thC and the tie is a reenactment reproduction item. Summary : This is a serious collector's ensemble and certainly will be the centerpiece of any Civil War collection display. I will provide additional photos and any additional details on request.
