Also in original period paint on the side is G (1) and beneath it (smaller size, 5/8) a 14. ON THE FRONT IS ALSO "65th Regt" (1 high). All paint has super patina and appearance and age. It is basically a black canvas covered wooden box (sides only) with a flap coming from the top down on the back and the flexible piece on the front. The frame has tarred canvas to protect it and the contents.Has the flexible flap coming down on the front to "seal" the box. Has most of the original 1 wide leather straps still remaining.....
Both the pair that go from the front over the shoulders and the pair that go from the top around the flap, holding it in, and attach at the bottom. The 2 iron buckles on the bottom are missing, but some of the others are there. STRAP BUCKLES AND HARDWARE ARE SIMILAR TO PIECES DUG IN CAMPS AND ON BATTLEFIELDS. Size is about 14" high x 15 wide x 4" deep. Condition shows wear, and the canvas is a bit stiff, as you would expect for the age, but not too bad.
It is fairly complete generally, missing just a couple of the strap pieces. Has both of the internal string tie straps. Again, scans show it all. A VERY RARE CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S ACCESSORY AND A GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR COLLECTION OF CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS PERSONAL ITEMS!!!
