Sand Creek Massacre Colonel John Chivington CIVIL War Era CDV Photo
John M Chivington, Colonel of the Colorado Militia fought at Glorietta Pass, New Mexico, 1862, but in 1864 commanded the Massacre at Sand Creek, Colorado Territory slaughtering Black Kettle's peaceful village of Cheyenne. A very rare, unlisted CDV photo image of Chivington, seated , taken at Stevenson & Marshall's Photographic Rooms, Leavenworth, Kansas.

Approx 4 x 2.5. Age spots, edge wear, Overall VG. This photo has been in my collection 20 years. I have been a serious collector of Western Frontier Army items since 1980.

I got the CDV along with some other Fort Leavenworth images in New England in the 1980s, when I lived there- I retired and moved to NC in 2014. The photo dates to circa 1864 and is original. I have always believed it to be Chivington based on the strong physical resemblance to the only other image of him published in uniform from that era.
