For sale here is a great looking old US Civil War, Indian Wars, or Spanish American War Cavalry Officer's Slouch Hat. The hat is in great overall shape considering its age. The hat is made from a dark navy blue doeskin wool fur felt, and features a black satin band and all brass fittings.
The blue felt shows heavy soiling and dusting and wear, but there is not mothing. The hat was completely covered in dust when i found it, and i have brushed it off. There are some spots of soiling, sweat, and some minor fading. This hat may clean up more with some time spent.
The black satin band shows heavy fading, dust soiling, sweat staining, and some separation at the bow. The top of the hat has 4 brass grommets. The brass shows nice even dull patina. The rear grommet has come out, and the front grommet is coming through. The hat was worn with a lower fold in the top than i have it displayed on the head. The top crease folds came down to the front and rear grommets. There are some pin holes in the front of the hat, and there is evidence of Cavalry insignia ghosting directly on the front just below the grommet, though this was hard to capture in the pictures. There are two grommets in the brim to allow for a chin cord. The grommets are oval and are to the front half of the hat, and are placed at the very interior of the brim.
The hat holds a great shape and the top and brim are plenty flexible enough to get the shape you desire for display. The brim measures approximately 2 1/2" at the sides and the back, and is a little wider at 2 3/4" at the front. The underside of the brim shows soiling, age, and wear, but shows a darker and cleaner color. The inside of the hat is unlined.
The hat does have a real leather sweatband that is in good condition with no cracking and no seam separation. The wearer's right side of the sweatband is embossed with the maker's name of Famous Parker Hats.
The sweatband does show use, age, wear, soiling, sweat, and a few spots of surface finish loss, but is very nice and feels pliable. I HAVE NOT flipped the sweatband over to see if there are any markings so that i will not rip, ruin, or tear the band out. There is a white satin bow at the back of the band, and there is a red wax paper size tag that is mostly illegible, but appears to say 7 3/? I would guess that the hat was marked 7 3/8, but it fits a little small for that.
The fit is more like a 7 1/4, and the hat will sit a little high to keep the period folds to the top. The hat measures approximately 13 1/4" front to back and 12" from side to side.
I have researched the hat maker extensively and have found nothing. I have also researched this style of hat extensively, and cannot come to a firm conclusion on the date. If you can date this hat, let me know, and i will update the listing. There is no doubt that the hat is old and is in amazing shape for its age. Other than the soiling, 1 missing grommet, 1 loose grommet, and the band fading, this is a very very nice hat that will display extremely well. This will be hard to upgrade and regardless of period is an extremely rare hat.
