US Civil War Union Infantry Leather Shako-Federal Chasseur Pattern
US Civil War Infantry Leather Shako. The front brass plate has a stamped American Eagle, Shield, and Infantry Horn.

The Shield paint is 80% complete but blue paint around the Infantry Horn has mostly worn away with only about 20% remaining. Top of crown bears a 2 diameter, circular metal cockade decorated with a red center and concentric rings of white and dark blue paint that has only light paint loss.

Extending from the top front cover of the shako is a much-faded, blue-green with beige colored pom pom. Stitching is tight and complete.

Exterior Leather is stiff but complete with only one barely visible repair on the underside of the left side corner on the visor, a very light glue repair was made. The original Black Leather Sweatband is intact, it does show some light wear and flaking, the stitching on this part has worn away on a 1/2 section towards the edge of the shako. It has the chin strap with original strap retainer in the crown, however the chinstrap is partially broken off, please review the pictures. Stamped "5" inside the shako and stamped "G" with 4 dots above it on the green underside of the visor. The front plate is currently being held in place with a small piece of Velcro and one of the original pins, you can see the Velcro in the 9th picture and the original pin is shown in the 10th picture.
