After the schooner's capture, the crew of the Defiance (said to be citizens of the rebel States), were sent North, possibly to a Union prison camp. The schooner was then sailed to Philadelphia by "Prize Master" R.
This official sales record document is on paper labeled for Custom House Broker E. Bailey, located on 402 Library Street near the Delaware River. The document was folded and labeled on the outside for storage at the custom house. I've been unable to locate any additional information about the schooner after it was enrolled at the Philadelphia port. It is guaranteed to be an original 1862 custom house document and not a copy.
Condition of this antique custom house document is EXCELLENT, considering its age. The text, both printed and handwritten, is completely legible. The edges have a few small chips and the paper has some minor age toning, mostly on the folds of the reverse side. Overall, this document looks great and would make a wonderful addition to any historical document collection.
