August 4, 1863 Salem, Massachusetts, Civil War, Draft board notification, that Joel W. Is exempt from military service, due to him supplying a substitute soldier, to take his place. Joel would have been drafted and forced to serve in the military, if not for his exemption. A seldom encountered conscription document from the Civil War, showing the ability to avoid the draft.
