Roberson after being wounded while serving with the NY Dragoons. Private Roberson was born and raised near Geneseo, and when the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the First New York Dragoons, a company recruited in Genesee county, in command of Captain Smith, and saw service under General Sheridan, taking part in all the principal battles during General Sheridan's raid down the Shenandoah Valley, was wounded in action at Mitchells Station Virginia. After his recovery he was detailed for guard duty at General Grant's headquarters, at City Point, Virginia. While on duty at Grant's headquarters, Private Roberson had the opportunity of seeing President Lincoln when he came to City Point to consult with General Grant.
