Original 1865 signature of John F. On a 2-1/2" X 4-1/2" cut card. Clearly penned with black ink.
John Frederick Hartranft was Civil War Beret Major General, who served as a Union Army Officer during the American Civil War and later as the 17th Governor of Pennsylvania. Commander of the 3rd Division of the 9th Army Corps. Received the Medal of Honor. The 1865 date likely refers to a significant event or period to his military service, possibly around the end of the Civil War or his appointment as Special Provost Marshal during the Lincoln assassination conspirators trial.
Card is in plastic, I did not remove for photos. Bill of sale dated November 28, 1994, in last two photos. Great collectable signature for Civil War or State Governors collectors.
I also have listed two handwritten letters dated 1876 and 1888, Auditor General Office of Pennsylvania signed and more articles on Hartranft. Feel free to ask questions. If you see a mistake in my listings, please let me know so I can revise the listing.
