1874 Battlefield Map Franklin Tennessee Civil War Original Hand Colored War Dept

War Department battlefield map titled Battlefield in front of Franklin, Tenn. Published in 1874 by authority of the Secretary of War in the Office of the Chief of Engineers, U. This map documents the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee (November 30, 1864), where Union forces under Maj.

Schofield repulsed the Confederate Army commanded by Lt. The map shows detailed troop positions, terrain, roads, rivers, and the town plan of Franklin, with period hand coloring identifying Union and Confederate forces. Printed on thicker paper stock with strong ink and clear detail throughout. Condition: One old vertical center tear extending into the lower margin, with a longstanding tape repair on the reverse.

The repair is stable and does not result in loss to the battlefield image. Typical age toning, light edge wear, and minor surface marks consistent with an original 19th-century military map. No attempt has been made to remove or alter the existing repair.

Background: This map was removed from the wall of a house in southern Delaware that was slated for demolition, where it had been stored rolled with other Civil War-era maps. It is offered here as found. This is an original 1874 War Department map, not a reproduction or later facsimile. Suitable for framing and advanced Civil War or Tennessee history collections.
