American 22nd Regiment New York National Guard (NYNG) Dress Shako. The body of the shako is pressed black felt, with leather being used on the crown, visor, chin strap and trim. Quite a bit of wear to exterior leather areas. The original sweatband is heavily worn condition, and the inner dome area is very worn on marker label, however, you can still make out the Horstmann Maker label.

Cap also named on interior. New York Side buttons are in decent condition. The front features a brass plate denoting the National Guard 22nd Regiment. Complete with a slide-in removable black and gray plume on top. Overall, very worn condition, however, decent condition considering cap is over 100+ years old.

Shakos of this design were popular with many of the state national guard and state militia units throughout the United States beginning in the 1870s through the 1890s era. The 22nd Infantry Regiment was one of twelve National Guard infantry regiments for the state of New York that were federalized for service in the Spanish American War. Formed in April of 1861, the 22nd was comprised of citizens of New York City and brought into federal service for the Civil War in May of 1862.

The regiment served with the Harper's Ferry garrison that capitulated to Stonewall Jackson during Lee's invasion of Maryland in September of 1862. It also served in the Gettysburg campaign in 1863.
