Antique 1860's Civil War Era Glass Leather Flask Surgeon W. M. Wood NAB Squadron
Antique 1860's Civil War Era Flask. This Civil War era flask is made of heavy glass covered in brown leather with a slide on pewter cup on the bottom. It measures 9" tall and 4 1/2" wide.

The screw top works well and is still lined with the original cork. The glass bottle is embossed M. V, Olry Philidelphia on the bottom.

The leather shows some wear, but is still in good shape and the stitching has no splits. One side of the cup is engraved Surgeon W. Wood" (William Maxwell Wood) and the other is engraved "NAB Squadron (North Atlantic Blockading Squadron) which was formed in 1861 to enforce the Union blockade of the ports of the Confederate States in the early days of the Civil War. William Maxwell Wood was an officer and surgeon who served as the Fleet Surgeon of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron aboard the U. Minnesota, participating in several Naval battles during the Civil War. He later went on to become the First Surgeon General of the US Navy.
