Nice Civil War Set of Folding "Bleeders", FLEEM. Nice set of folding bleeders. It was used by surgeons during the Civil War.
The 3 blades are different sizes, which would make different size "holes" and result in different amounts of blood be released. These were also used by physicians for much of the 18th century, and right up to the Civil War. There was a feeling in the medical community that letting out blood, especially if a person was sick and had "bad" blood, would get rid of the bad and help in the healing process. Patients were generally lucky to survive the process.
This appears to be a particularly early one, very likely used by a surgeon before the Civil War. Blades are pinned together with a brass piece on each side. Also covers the cutting blade so that it can be carried in the surgeon's pocket without injuring himself. Measures about 3 1/4 long and 1 wide at the widest. In very good condition overall, with nice aged appearance and patina. This is a very scarce item to find, and is a GREAT addition to a collection of Civil War medical items.
