Antique Civil War Wooden Box with Bullet Fragment Old Wood Primitive Chest Army

Antique Wooden Box with Bullet Fragment? Box is in OK used shape.

Not busted up, but bottom is coming loose, glue and clamps would fix. I bought this box because it looks older than Father Time. It just has a lot of years on it. The paint is so old, and starting to rise, that it almost looks like a laminate coming loose. No telling what was inside. Has a great patina that only a hundred years could bring on.

Closed, measures 11 by 7 by 5. Inside is about 10 by 6 by 4.25. Box is hinged, but has no clasp on front.

On the right side there is a metallic fragment deeply, firmly imbedded in the side. I cannot imagine why anyone would drive an odd shaped fragment like this into the box. Plus, it looks to have flown into the box at a high impact; no drive marks on the odd-shaped metal object. The more I look, the more I believe it may be a bullet fragment.

It is a gray sliver, like a fragmented bullet (shot all my life). It is not magnetic and lead is non-magnetic. There are a couple other nicks near this fragment, possibly from other flying pieces.

I can imagine this in a Civil War home when lead was flying. Since this has no clasp, it may have been sitting in one spot in a home, perhaps holding stationary and writing materials. Would it have been traveling with an army officer with no clasp?

Dont let folks pick at it. It is tight now, but if enough folks pull on it, it wont be. Box would be a great decorator / collector piece. This box came from an estate where there was a Mattsons Family Syringe No. 1 that dates from 1860s (+-) and also an unknown (to me) medical device suction pump?
