Civil War Model 1860 Heavy Cavalry Sword, with John Maggs "JM" inspection mark, likely dating to 1864. Very clean, very sharp and extremely well-preserved.
Measures 35-1/2 inches from tip to hilt, obviously battle tested and used. Ricasso is worn smooth with elements of original maker's mark still visible, but not legible - at least not to me. Remaining bottom of oval mark points to "Emerson & Silver" or "Mansfield & Lamb" - which also strongly correlates to the John Maggs inspector mark. Compares precisely to documented specimens from these makers and Maggs. Please all photos - they are accurate. Features super-solid handle, handguard and tight wire wrap - with fine original patina throughout.Pommel is extremely tight and cap displays engraved "90 R" adjacent to "JM". Underside of brass handguard also displays identifying mark but was likely placed by soldier versus maker. Be asured this sabre is neither ceremonial or ornamental - it was most definitely designed and produced to slash, stab and kill, and is very capable of all - I almost lost my hand pulling it out for photos. Obtained directly from family of original cavalryman.
