Union and Confederate Doctors use opiates liberally on their military patients for relief of pain from wounds as well as simple complaints of not feeling well due to constipation. Morphine, derived from opium was injected into patients by the recently developed scarce syringe, 29,828 ounces of morphine sulphate was dispensed to Union Soldiers. This Opium bottle with pontil base was used by a Civil War Veteran for the pain he suffered from wounds he received during his service as a soldier in the Civil War.
