Belknap enlisted November 7, 1861 as a major of the 15th Iowa infantry. He was wounded April 6 at Shiloh, Tennessee, where he was shot in the shoulder.
August 1, 1862 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and on April 22, 1863 was promoted to Colonel of the 15th Iowa infantry. On August 17, 1864 he was promoted to Brigadier General and in March 1865 he was promoted to Major General by Brevet. He served under Ulysses S Grant at Vicksburg and as a division, Commander and Sherman's Atlanta campaign.After the war, he served as Grant secretary of war succeeding, William Tecumseh Sherman and was later charged with corruption in the office where he admitted to receiving bribes for the appointment of an Indian post trader and resigned on March 7, 1876. Condition: there are trimmed corners and toning or soiling on the lower right part of the front side and the lower left portion of the backside.
