Sergeant Samuel Ilgenfritz of York County, Pennsylvania enlisted with Company I, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry, fought at Antietam, was seriously wounded in action at the Battle of Fredericksburg, along with many of his comrades December 12, 1862 and re-enlisted January, 1864 with the 187th Pennsylvania Infantry serving in the Virginia Campaign until the War's End. After the War he was ordained a Lutheran Minister, and being active with the GAR served as Chaplain of Sedgwick Post 37, York until his death in 1903.

An Original Civil War Letter from Sgt Ilgenfritz at Camp Cadwalader, Philadelphia, March 7, 1863 to his family- A deeply spiritual young man he grieves with them for the suffering they have endured, offers his prayers for them, and hopes he may see them again. He reports that he prays every evening in his bunk, and he expects he will be home again in a a week as his furlough has been signed by Captain Seife. He signs the letter "Good night, God Bless you all, Your son in Christ, Sam".

5pp ink, 8 x 6. Age stains, edge wear Overall VG. Comes w a typed transcript, Service info, copies of his 1903 obituaries as well as a copy of a news clipping in which he states that Antietam and Fredericksburg had knocked all the Democracy out of him. General Orders and other imprints.
