The 166th Ohio Infantry Regiment, formed in Huron County, Ohio was a 100 day unit formed to protect Washington during the summer of 1864 when Confederate General Jubal Early's forces invaded Maryland and the District of Columbia. An Original Civil War Letter from Private Charles W Hale at Fort Ward, DC, one of the Union fortifications defending the Capital. The soldier, Charles w Hale writes August 14, 1864 to his Father, noting he is sick, naming comrades who are also sick, although "Ike Gibson" is on picket duty, as is Frank Hawkins, and expresses special concern for Will Barnes who is in the Hospital and who's Father has been telegraphed. B Hale, at Greenwich Station, Huron County, Ohio. The cover has the cancelled stamp and postmark. Comes w service info- all the named soldiers are from Huron County and survive the War. General Orders and other imprints.
