Private Anson W Hutchinson served 2 years with the 32nd New York Infantry surviving the Battles of Gaines Mill, VA and Crampton's Gap, Maryland until he was discharged, disabled early 1863. An Original Civil War Letter from Anson, March 20, 1863, soon after his return home, to Brother John W Hutchinson, 115th New York. Anson writes that he is well, and says to tell you and "Square" (Brother-in-Law John H Mason, also serving with the 115th NY), he is well, writing at the little stand in the corner- the weather is very cold and sleighing never better, soon the folks will be making sugar, he wishes You Both was here to get some warm sugar to eat, and reports the lumbermen are finished, the river is full of logs, their wages are very high but I will not work in the water this spring, but on the farm. Also "Lit" and the boys are well, "Lit" got 2 letters with a ring and some shells, she is tickled to death and has to show them to everyone that comes in.
He also reports that John's wife " Caty" is very well, but little "Arty" is not well. Finally, he has news- prospects are good that He will "jump over the broomstick this spring" (get married), and sends his love from your Brother Anson W. Hutchinson to John W Hutchinson. 2pp 8 x 1" w age stains, edge wear, and the original Postal Cover addressed to "Mr John W Hutchinson, Hilton Head, South Carolina, Co C 115th Regt NYSV " with added note "in haste. The cover has it's original postal stamp with "West Day, " Northville, Saratoga County New York postmark.
Anson from West Day, Saratoga, County was discharged disabled, but survived the War, and is buried at Northampton, New York. Brother-in-law "Square" also survives the War, but John dies of fever that summer at Beaufort, SC. General Orders and other imprints.
