CIVIL War 20th Illinois Nco Officers Commission Raleigh North Carolina 1865
The 20th Illinois Volunteer infantry regiment mustered in 1861 and saw numerous actions incl heavy fighting and casualties at Fort Donelson & Shiloh, Tennessee, the Battle of Raymond in the Vicksburg, Mississippi Campaign and the Atlanta Georgia and Carolinas Campaigns. An Original Civil War US Volunteers Commission for Corporal William Bradt of Crete, Illinois, 20th Illinois Infantry issued at Raleigh, North Carolina April 28th, 1865. Corporal Bradt enlisted October 5, 1864 and took part in Sherman's March through Georgia and the Carolinas. 1p 15 x 10 on heavy stock tan paper with the US eagle illustration. The Commission is signed by Captain Henry King as regimental commander, and by Sergeant Frank Chester as Acting Adjutant. Captain King and Sergeant Chester enlisted in 1861 and served the entire War. King rose from the ranks to Commander of the 20th- Ira Blanchard (I Marched with Sherman) says of King "of Britton's Lane (Tennessee) Fame", "the boys were quite proud of him".
