CIVIL War 44th New York Ellsworths Avengers 1863 Letter & General Rufus Ingalls
The 44th New York Volunteers, named "Ellsworth's Avengers" saw 3 years of the War with significant losses defending Little Round Top under the command of Colonel Strong Vincent during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, and suffering almost 200 men and officers killed in the War. Civil War Lt Frank M Kelly enlisted in 1861 as a sergeant in H Company, 44th New York Volunteers. The following year he was promoted to 2nd LT and served another 2 years as General Rufus Ingall's aide including at Gettysburg. An Original Civil War Letter from Kelly at Washington, DC to his Father, Sept12, 1863 - he has received Father's letter and being too late to telegraph, writes he will be coming up to Washington again the next week and would like Father to come and see him for a few days. He also reports General Ingalls is getting better and will probably go down to camp this week so Father may meet him.
