The 47th New York Infantry Volunteer "Washington Grays" formed in Brooklyn and NY City and served 1861-65 incl the Port Royal. SC Expedition, Fort Wagner, SC, Port Royal, Hilton Head, SC, Fort Pulaski, Georgia, and the Battle of Olustee Florida, in Barton's Brigade, losing 313 men, the highest total of any Union regiment. Captain Charles Moore enlisted as a Captain of Volunteers, at NY City in 1861 serving 3 years w the 47th New York Volunteers. An Original Civil War Letter from his wife Josie at New York City, June 15, 1862 to her'Own Dear Husband- she misses his letters, as no vessel has arrived from Port Royal (SC) where he is with the 47th.
The last letter came by gunboat w Sergeant Porter, We have no news from South Carolina except that of the Rebel papers which report the Yankee advance on Charleston has been repulsed, which she can hardly credit. "How many hearts are bleeding for the dear ones who will never return", she bemoans the "terrible system" that has deprived so many of their freedom and the separation of husbands and wives from their children, "barbarizing our own race", God has laid the South in waste and the citizens w hardly the necessities of life.
