CIVIL War 5th Maryland Sergeant's Commission Antietam Survivor

The 5th Maryland Volunteers was a notable Union regiment, suffering heavy casualties assaulting AP Hill's Confederates with the 2nd Corps at the Battle of Antietam Bloody Lane, suffering 150 men killed and wounded, and again later in the War at the June, 1863 Battle of Winchester, when the 5th was surrounded by the entire Confederate Army and fought their way out, losing over 300 men captured. An Original Civil War Commission promoting Sergeant Thomas N Smith to the rank of 2nd Sergeant in Company G of the 5th, issued at Fredericksburg, Virginia, in August, 1865. The Commission is signed by 5th Maryland Colonel William L Bamberger and by Lt Bolster Schultz as Acting Adjutant. Sergeant Smith enlisted in 1861, was wounded in action at the Battle of Antietam, but survived the War and was promoted when the 5th was mustered out at Fredericksburg.

Colonel William W Bamberger also enlisted in 1861, was also wounded at the Battle of Antietam, having taken command during thee Battle. Lt Bolster Schulz also served the entire War, rising through the ranks to 1st Lieutenant.
