An original complete Civil War letter from Mary E Hoffer at Mount Joy Lancaster County Oct 27, 1862 describing her visit to uncle at Hagerstown, & the Antietam battlefield- describes the dead, the stench burials & ambulances, rebel breastworks & POWs, battlefield debris- shells, army crackers, muskets. I just missed visit by The President that day, saw 10,000 soldiers waiting his arrival, etc. 4pp ink, light but legible, neat hand.
Age stains & minor wear. Mary Hoffer, daughter of Mount Joy Newsman Jacob Hoffer was just 16.
The cover is addressed to her friend Lou E Wortz at Hanover, York Co Pa. Cover w stamp & Mt Joy postmark (The cover in Mary's hand came w letter but has a July postmark).
