Civil war field glasses / binoculars. 8 - long when fully extended. (with the sun shades extended). The eyepieces are constructed of stamped brass. Indicative of early 1860s manufacture.
Purposely unmarked, in order to sneak in through to the south during the blockade? As the French the main supplier of optics during the American civil war. Thousands of these saw service during the American civil war (both north and south). The French term for binoculars is'jumelles' or twin girls. French made field glasses were used by the soldiers from both the north and south during the war between the states.
These are NOT the commonly seen post war' opra glasses. These have the sliding' sun shades' on the front lens barrels..(indicative of true civil war era field glasses). With a gutta-percha adjusting wheel. The exposed brass have a blackened' Japanned finish. The leather covering on the main barrels is very good, but have a few minor scrapes from age and use. The leather wrapping on both of the forward sliding sun shades is missing.
But they have a pleasing patina that doesn't detract from the over all appearance of. Excellent condition for being over a. The adjusting wheel works flawlessly.
Don't pass them up! Real civil war era Military field glasses. The exact type carried by officers from both sides. Identical to the binoculars seen in the hands of the statue of Brigadier General Gouverneur Warren on Little Round Top in Gettysburg! This is one of the nicest sets I have ever offered.
A must for that civil war collector you know! The cavalry sword is not included!
I will be listing that soon.
