Historic "Little Washington", North Carolina was occupied and burned by Federal forces during the Civil War. An original Civil War Letter from Private Edwin Thomas Scott, 12th New York Cavalry at Washington, NC, July 11, 1863 bearing an adorable 4 x1 color pencil sketch of a happy pooch bearing a patriotic banner. The letter to his wife Lola reports he and her brother Henry are doing well despite fleas and mosquitos, describing his very large quarters and his personal items in detail- - an entire room in a turpentine warehouse, his oil cloth blanket, corn husk pillow and desk. His haversack, jacket canteen, sabre & pistol etc hang near the door, his extra cartridges and writing materials, mess spoon, knife, fork utensils in his "pantry". The letter continues the next day and describes his rations of salt beef, hardtack molasses etc. He asks re their gardening back home and if Uncle Philo's chickens still bother Mother. He finishes the letter with hope for an end to the War soon, and signs "I remain my dear girl your affectionate husband". He notes his address on page 2 center margin Direct Co C 12th N. A humorous and affectionate letter from a new husband, with age spots, edge tears, wear, Overall VG.
