Colonel George Hay Covode served 3 years with the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry and was Killed in Action at the Battle of St Mary's Church, Virginia. Was born on August 19, 1835 in Covodesville, Pennsylvania. An Original Civil War Discharge for Re-Enlisting issued for Sergeant John Darkes of Company F, 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry at Bristoe Station, Virginia October 12, 1864 after 3 years service,, allowing him to Re-enlist as a Veteran Volunteer, stating he is born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and signed by George Hay Covode as Major of the 4th.

This Discharge is illustrated w a large Federal eagle, and measures 8 x 11 ptd/ink on heavy paper stock with postwar red ink pension bounty notations by a War Dept clerk. The reverse bears an applied red seal and portion of a US Revenue stamp and is filled in with his signed Oath of Identity as Sergeant. The Discharge is also signed by Captain Charles Hazard as having re-enlisted, and a postwar red applied seal of his claim for pension.

Age stains, edge wear, Overall VG. Colonel Covode was described as good-natured and fearless, and rode into the enemy lines during the Battle near Richmond.

He is buried in Westmoreland County, Pa, Sergeant Darkes is buried in Lebanon Pa. General Orders and other imprints.
