Colonel Robert May Wiley, of Bellevue Plantation, Craig County, VA, served on the Governor's staff at Richmond during the War. An Original Civil War Letter with cover from Colonel Wiley, at Richmond, May 8, 17862 to Mrs Susan James, wife of Green James. Who had 2 sons in the Fincastle Rifles, 11th Virginia, informing her that in consequence of the battles near Williamsburg Mr James left the city to look after their sons. He reports losses were heavy and has the worst apprehensions for the fate of some of our friends in the Fincastle Rifles, but still hopes for the best. He reports Mr James will return tomorrow and inform you of their fates. There are a great many rumours in the City but we do no know which are reliable. 2pp 8 x 5 ink. Edge wear, age spots, Overall VG. Comes w the original postal cover bearing the 5 cent stamp w image of President Jefferson Davis, and Richmond VA cancellation, addressed to Mrs Susan James, Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia. The cover is worn and stained and the reverse is missing a fold. Comes w service info-Son Edward was killed at the Battle of Williamsburg and buried in a mass grave.
