We are offering two original albumen photographs of Fort Sedgwick near Petersburg, Virgina known as Fort Hell by the Union soldiers who were quartered there because of the heavy Confederate artillery fire. The fort was built to command the Jerusalem Plank Road. We believe the photos may be by Timothy H. O'Sullivan, well-known Civil War photographer.

The first photo appears to have been taken when the fort was under construction (the fort was established in 1864). A man in civilian clothes sits on the ledge above the fort. NOTE - The Metropolitan Museum has a silver print albumen photograph, taken by Timothy O'Sullivan, of the fort with men in civilian clothes who appear to be supervising construction. Photograph 6" x 6"; heavy cardboard mount 8" x 10". Entrance to the Mine, to Mine Fort Hell.

This photo appears to be a silver print albumen. Photograph 5 1/2" x 5 3/4"; heavy cardboard mount 8" x 10". CONDITION - Both photos are in Good Condition.
