Signature is bold and clean, with minor toning to the paper consistent with age. A rare piece associated with one of the more multifaceted figures of the Civil War era.

Congressman, Union Army officer, and later Minister Resident to Japan. During the Civil War, he served as colonel and commander of the 107th and 117th New York Infantry and helped organize seventeen Union regiments at the Elmira depot. As Chairman of the Committee on Militia, he was an important legislative figure during the war. Later in life, he became a Florida Supreme Court justice. Signature Authenticity: The signature has been carefully compared to authenticated examples and is believed to be genuine.
