Historic Greenville South Carolina was an important manufacturing center during the Civil War. By April 1865 South Carolina had suffered from the march of General WT Sherman and his bummers.
Greeneville, however was not occupied until after the surrender of the last South Carolina forces in the field at Raleigh, NC and the passage Stoneman's Cavalry through the City in pursuit of Jefferson Davis. An Original Civil War Courier Letter from "Colonel Perryman" Commanding at HQ Greenville Court House, South Carolina, April 4, 1865 ordering Captain Goodlett as Company Commander to report to this HQ without delay. The written Order is in the hand and signed by J. C Dupre who served with the Second South Carolina Palmetto Infantry during the War. The 1p 8 x 5" written command, on is on brown Confederate manufactured hand-lined paper and comes with it's original postal cover delivered "By Courier", addressed to "Captain W. Goodlett Commdg Co, Marietta, SC.The letter and cover are age stained, with edge wear, Overall VG. Captain WH Goodlett to whom the courier dispatch is addressed enlisted in 1862 in the 3rd SC Reserves Infantry, known as the "Old Guard of the Mountains". General Orders and other imprints.
