CIVIL War Harpers Ferry Virginia 19th Ny Soldier Who Would Be Damned
In May, 1861 The 19th New York Infantry aka " the Cayuga Regiment" enlisted at Seneca Falls for 3 months service. An Original Civil War Charge of Desertion issued at Camp Cayuga, Harpers Ferry, July 25, 1861 charging Private Thomas Hopper of Company C, 19th NYSM with Desertion, that on the previous day he had'insolently refused to obey and order fro his Captain directing him to assist in cleaning company quarters, " , and he told his Company NCO, Sergeant Manning "he could fight as well as any man but he'd be damned if he would shovel dirt, or words to that effect.

The Charge is signed by Company Commander Captain James E Ashcroft, and George Martin as "Witness" for Sergeant Manning. Private Hopper was restored to service, and after 2 years with the 19th NY (renamed the 3rd NY Artillery) he re-enlisted with the 1st NY Cavalry, fighting in West Virginia and New Market, Va, serving to the War's End.

Apparently wherever The 19th NY was posted they named it "Camp Cayuga", as they had also done for their camps in Maryland and Virginia. 1p 8 x 10 w folds, age stains, edge wear, Overall VG. General Orders and other imprints.
