CIVIL WAR LETTER Gettysburg! 2nd Corps Artillery Never been whipped
Great content letter from an unknown soldier, probable artilleryman, in the AoP 2nd Corps 10 days after engagement at Gettysburg. Please forgive the poor lighting and shadows Please ask any questions. July 13th 1863 Here your devoted nephew is ready again to share in a scrimmage which I doubt not will come off tomorrow. We arrived here day before yesterday and have at last got settled and thrown up entrenchments, and report says that tomorrow Sedgewick and all troops on the right are to advance and try to turn the enemy's left flank and we are to hold this place any way. We have a strong place and the enemy have a stronger.
If we have to advance on their works, I shall feel like trembling for I feel as we cannot take them any way. Those directly in front of us it is very strong naturally and they have fortified it so as to make it nearly impossible, but if we have got to go, I will go as far as any one. There is an old saying in the Army of the Potomac that the 2nd Corps never were whipped.
I won't say that but I can say we never lost a piece of cannon and never will. I rather think our little 4,000 fighting men can whip their might. At Gettysburg we whipped double our number and with the men in such spirits as they are at the present time, we can do it again.
Give my love to all.
