Charles Quimby served from June 1861 and fought in the Richmond Campaign and at at Antietam, MD before his death from disease, November, 1862. An Original Civil War Letter from Cousin Henry W Hudson at Concord, to Private Quimby dated Jan. 12" (1862) "Friend and Cousin"- He writes that he received his letter and was very happy that he and the "rest of the Boys" are well and a growing fat", he wishes he was growing fat with them, and he and several of the boys would like to join the Vermont 3rd Regt, but may be wanted at home if "Old England" takes hold, we shall be wanted to play "Yankee Behind the Stump". Canada is enlisting soldiers to go and fight the States, and if so hopes "they will get a licken", and lose the whole of Canada. He reports it is dull here, has only 10 cents, and asks if Washington has snow. "At Waterford Asa Hovey was hung in effigy" on his barn. Hovey told his neighbors there was a horse thief and he and they crept up and saw the effigy and thought the thief had hung himself. He ends with "Write soon, Good Bye from your cousin Henry W Hudson".
